IMPORTANT ADVOCACY UPDATE (as of 5/14/18)

As you may know, the IIDA Delta Regional Chapter and the ASID South Central Chapter have been working together this year in Louisiana to advocate on behalf of the industry in Baton Rouge.  There were two main bills of interest this year, HB 623, which sought to repeal the interior design license and, HB 748, that sought to implement an occupational licensing review act through the Governor’s office.  Interior Design really came out in a position of strength with both these efforts.  The bill sponsor of both these bills, Representative Julie Emerson, worked tirelessly with us to understand the profession and our unique regulation that is highly valued in the industry in the state of LA.  With that said, Representative Emerson graciously agreed to not move forward with the interior design deregulation bill.  She also shared, as part of the public record during a hearing, that she gained valuable information about the profession after meeting with interior designers, particularly the students.

Both associations plan to engage in future dialogues with Representative Emerson and continue to educate all legislators about the industry.  If you  have more questions or want to get involved locally with future advocacy efforts please contact Heidi Meibaum, IIDA with the IIDA Delta Regional at heidimeib@yahoo.com 504-452-9965 or Cassandra Aalgaard with the ASID South Central Chapter at cfaalgaard@att.net.
